Emily McCarty grew up in Madrid, Iowa. She graduated cum laude from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in 2006 with degrees in English and History. Emily also studied in England, Thailand, and Vietnam. During her travels, she fell in love with learning about and experiencing other cultures. She also became a connoisseur of Pad Thai and English teas.

Emily then attended Drake University Law School, where she was a staff member of the Drake Law Review. Emily was certified as a student attorney with the Drake Legal Clinic in both the Criminal Defense Clinic and Advanced Criminal Trial Clinic. At the Clinic, Emily represented individuals charged with felonies and misdemeanors. This experience sparked Emily’s love for being a courtroom advocate. It also made her realize she had a talent for representing people at scary, vulnerable, and emotional points in their lives. In May 2009, Emily earned her law degree with High Honors. She was admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa in September 2009.

For her entire career, Emily has represented employees. She finds this work gives her the opportunity to help people re-write a difficult chapter of their lives—from one in which they were treated unfairly and perhaps taken advantage of, to one in which they stood up for themselves and fought for what was right. As an added bonus, Emily gets to meet courageous and fascinating people on the regular—it’s a pretty sweet job perk.

One of Emily’s greatest strengths is her ability to advocate using the written word. Emily serves on the Iowa Association for Justice’s Amicus Committee, where she volunteers her time to assist in writing briefs on important legal issues presented to the Iowa Court of Appeals and Iowa Supreme Court. This gives Emily an opportunity to advance the rights of all Iowans and to contribute to a greater good. She also helps lead the firm’s appellate practice.

After she graduated from law school, Emily returned to Madrid. She lives with her husband, Aaron, and their two kids. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, cheering for the Cyclones, and riding her bike on the High Trestle Trail.
